Roy Halladay gave him a signed jersey with a handwritten personal message before he left for the Phillies. While McDonald wouldn’t share the inscription, the gesture was noteworthy. Halladay expected perfection from everyone. That’s why he insisted McDonald play shortstop when he pitched.
